Modernica is a studio and furniture manufacturer that truly understands their audience. They produce quality Mid-century Modern products, everything from ceramics to outdoor furniture, with a critical eye and at a reasonable price. Over the last few years Modernica has collaborated with folks like KRINK, The Hundreds and DABSMYLA. These collaborations are the stuff of dreams! Each partnership brings an unexpected twist to the brand, creating something truly unique and valuable. Turning a piece of furniture into a piece of art.

Modernica is a company founded on the principles and the passion of the vibrant North American Modernism movement. This era is often said to have originated here in Los Angeles with the Case Study Program in 1945.

Modernica embraces this Modernist movement’s ethos. It is with the criterion and ideals established in this period that the myth of the quintessential California lifestyle and attitude was imagined and created.

Simple design, high-quality, high-functionality, and accessibility are the basic tenets which drive our company. It is this clear vision and commitment that has enabled Modernica to transform itself from its beginnings as a vintage store to its current position as a distinguished manufacturer and designer of Modern furniture.

Modernica Studio functions as a design collective with everyone participating and sharing in a united responsibility to the ideologies of the past, while evolving with the times and introducing new products and new ideas that hold true to Modernism’s core values.

Modernica occupies a 1929 factory located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. This factory houses the production facilities, offices, and a prop-rental house. Modernica has over 70 employees and proudly builds each piece of furniture one-by-one.

My favorite pieces:

1. DABSMYLA x Modernica Fiberglass Shell Chair

A collaboration with our favorite artist duo DABSMYLA! We actually just ordered these pieces up for our studio and can’t wait for them to come in. UPDATE – chairs arrived, here is my story about them: DABSMYLA x Modernica Fiberglass Side Shell Chair

Using familiar characters form their deep roster, DABSMYLA designed playful patterns for the core Modernica line.

Also, you need to check out Before and Further: An Installation at the Modernica Factory by DABSMYLA – before it’s too late. “For their most ambitious exhibition to date – artist duo DABSMYLA presents Before and Further, a 4,000 square foot installation takeover of our own 1930 Spanish Revival building, located on the Modernica factory property. DABSMYLA have fully transformed its interior and exterior with their newest paintings, sculptures, installations and exclusive furnishings from limited-edition fiberglass shell chairs and hand painted ceramics to custom-built lighting installations, all designed and created exclusively for their collaboration with Modernica utilizing the factory’s extensive technical capabilities.”

2. The Hundreds x Modernica Fiberglass Rocker:

A collaboration with The Hundreds x Modernica:

“The Hundreds is pleased to announce the release of the The Hundreds X Modernica “CMYK” Fiberglass Arm Shell Rocker. This release will be available for pre-order from The Hundreds’ Online Shop for 24 hours on Tuesday, April 29th.

In 1949, prolific Modernist designers Charles and Ray Eames introduced their fiberglass Case Study chairs, propelling the idea of accessible, mass designed furniture for everyone. Los Angeles-based Modernica has the distinction of being the only manufacturer capable of producing the Case Study Fiberglass Shell Chairs under the Eames’ intended process. On the chair’s timeless design, owner Jay Novak says, “This was Eames. It’s strictly there for its function. And as it turns out, it’s also beautiful. But that’s the way it goes. You make something that functions perfectly? Usually, it comes out very, very attractive.” This is the first time that Modernica has produced a true black shell. – Bobby Hundreds

The Hundreds X Modernica “CMYK” Fiberglass Arm Shell Rocker features a Black shell, Cyan wire, and Magenta and Yellow rockers, available in ultra-limited quantities.” SOLD OUT

3. Dr. Woo x Modernica Fiberglass Xray Chair

A collaboration with Dr. Woo and Modernica:

Dr. Woo is busy… He’s one of the most followed tattoo artists on Instagram, has a year-long wait list with an undisclosed celebrity clientele, landed the cover of LA Weekly, and has been featured by The New York Times, GQ, Elle, Mr. Porter-The Journal, Complex, and Hypebeast, to name a few. The in-demand tattoo artist has teamed up with Modernica for his first-ever foray in product design. “I work so much – I feel like when I stand up, I’ve given a part of myself to the chair,” shares Dr. Woo. An x-ray of Dr. Woo’s body has been carefully hand applied to the front and back of each Modernica fiberglass side chair.

“Hailed by the media as “the most in-demand tattooist in the world,” Brian Woo (aka Doctor Woo) is globally recognized for his signature single-needle, black and grey works of art, as well as his personal style. He broke into the tattoo scene in 2008 when the legendary tattoo icon Mark Mahoney invited him to apprentice at Shamrock Social Club in Hollywood, CA. After a three-year apprenticeship, Dr. Woo spent another six years tattooing some of the world’s most sought after influencers alive. With a year-long wait list and a clientele of the world’s most important influencers, Dr. Woo is transitioning his brand to include very limited product releases and select projects.”
