Recent blockbuster Captain America has followed in the footsteps of many movies taking comic book characters to the silver screen. For the movie, Daniel Simon was enlisted to create a series of vehicles in true ’40s style that would be both viable to manufacture and historically accurate. Simon worked with director Joe Johnston to meticulously research accurate engineering that would result in an authentic look for the Marvel universe.

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks, wrapping up some big projects and getting them out the door. Did you catch the Michael Wallis interview on the Daily Show?! It was incredible. I could listen to Michael talk all day.
IF you missed it, check on the Daily Show’s website and see if they have a sample of the interview posted. I’m pretty sure they still do.

In other news, our boy Skypager is featured in the newest issue of Arkitip. AND. WE. ARE. SO. STOKED.
Mad props SKYPAGE! Can’t wait to check out the mag.

Using the theme of Color we have selected a group of artists to create whatever they wish using Comex supplied paint.

Having grown dramatically from a collection of small family
businesses to a major industrial corporation, The Comex Group produces
paints and coatings customers count on for quality across North, Central
and South America.

Artists will use the magazine as a medium to give the viewer a
closer look at their results. The selected artists will be encouraged to
dig deeper into their process to showcase the inner workings of their
creations.

The culmination of these efforts has been published here in this
hand numbered edition, neatly housed with a cobranded Comex + Arkitip
paint brush.

Along with the printed issue edition we have shot a series of
Chronicles to document the artist’s processes. To round out the project,
the release will be celebrated with installations of the featured
artists created works at Project Space, in Los Angeles.

There has been a lot of talk this week about the day bag for men. Personally, I need one. @joymcgill recommended a stylish piece from the 2012 Louis Vuitton S/S line and I fell in love with it. Needless to say, I’ve been looking around and seeing what other options are out there. Today I found it! Created by Spanish designer Gonzalo Fonseca, Steve Mono is a Spanish leather goods and accessories label dedicated to producing high quality, handmade products. Since it’s inception back in 2007, the label has been making waves due to their timeless designs like this “Tyler” day-bag. Featuring a large main compartment, the classic tote is handmade in Spain from 100% genuine calf leather with an adjustable, removable shoulder strap. Also available in black and brown colorways.

So we were cruising around the mall today and I was so stoked to find that the Buckle [here in Tulsa, OK @ The Woodland Hills Mall] was carrying HippyTree! Obviously I had to pick up a handful of tees: the National tee, the Peel tee, the Film tee and my favorite, the Wind tee. [perfect for the ranch]
If you’re in OK, you should stop by the Woodland Hills Mall and check out the Buckle’s HippyTree selection. If you’re not in the area, be sure to check out your local Buckle or PacSun [because I also noticed that PacSun was carrying them as well]. If they don’t have it in your local retail store/skate-surf shop, be sure to demand they carry it.

This post was inspired by Tulsa fashionista and PR guru @JoyMcgill “RT @ninagarcia: The first Birkin bag by Hermes was produced in 1984 #fashion”

I love the Birkin bag, but I think the most incredible hand bag in history is the Hermes Sac à dépêches. In 1935, the Hermes leather Sac à dépêches was introduced. In 1956, a photo of Grace Kelly, who had become the new Princess of Monaco, carrying the Sac à dépêches bag appeared in Life. Thus, the company – or possibly more like the public – renamed it the Kelly bag, and it became hugely popular.

I just realized that digestion starts in the mouth.

If I skip that process, I only get a fraction of the nutritional value of my food. I really never gave it much thought, that was until I saw our new juicer in action. Two things came to mind:

1. Most of the nutrients of vegetables and fruits are efficiently turned into juice, discarding a large majority of the actual fruit or veggie as “waste.” But to actually see the juice, the nutrients, was astounding. Only a very small percentage of the total vegetable or fruit is “juiced.” So it got me thinking, if I’m not chewing my food properly, can my body efficiently break down the food I’m shoveling into my mouth and get those nutrients? And if so:
2. How much energy does it take to do so? Am I putting a strain on my overall working/living performance?

So I did a little research. To save you the nerd chatter, I’ll tell you this. You should chew each bite at least 20 times before swallowing. When we gulp down
partially chewed food, tremendous stress is put on our digestive system and
zaps us of our vital energy several ways.

Our new juicer has inspired me to become a better food processor myself.

Pretty much the best thing I have seen in a while. Props to ダンススタジオDO-UP　AYAクラス .
The little girl in orange is pretty incredible.
For over two years I have been struggling to get back into writing on here, I have come up with a solution. Let’s see if it pans out. If there is anything you’d like to read about, please send me questions/ideas. I’d love to hear from you, feel free to email me or just post in the comments.

In other news, I’ve been trying to figure out why they called Mr. Jackson – Shoeless Joe Jackson. After many hours spent daydreaming of the answer, I’ve discovered:
According to Jackson, he got his nickname during a mill game played in Anderson, South Carolina. Jackson suffered from blisters on his foot from a new pair of cleats, and they hurt so much that he had to take his shoes off before an at bat. As play continued, a heckling fan noticed Jackson running to third base in his socks, and shouted “You shoeless son of a gun, you!”, and the resulting nickname “Shoeless Joe” stuck with him throughout the remainder of his life.
I’m so happy to hear it was a result of actually being shoeless. So many nicknames these days have no true/real/authentic meanings.
I can now curb the Shoeless Joe fiasco in my brain.

I just spent five days shooting in LA. Eight locations, eight setups, eight wonderful subjects and one of my favorite photos of the trip was this shot at LAX. Which took me all but thirty seconds to produce. It’s Funny how that works out.
So I have to run off to the gym, but I wanted to share a few things with you.
I remember when I first read about John Maeda in 2004, thanks to Fast Company. The article was: Master of Design – John Maeda. I remember this quote: “Maeda wants to rewind ‘overfeaturized’ tech tools back to version 1.0, and make them seamless and intuitive.” I was stoked on this idea and for a split second, had this dream of going back to school. I’d go to MIT, live in the Media Lab and attend John’s lectures/classes/discussions/chats/happy hours.
[Fast forward seven years. John has moved from MIT's Media Lab and is now President at RISD.]
Today I read an article in Fast Co Design titled: John Maeda Speaks on RISD’s Backlash Against His Cyber-Style Leadership – A frustrating little piece about John’s uphill battle to streamline and modernize RISD’s interdisciplinary framework. What a nightmare, and equally an incredible challenge. I don’t believe there is a more difficult client to work with than a group of creatives. Especially if that group consists of multifaceted designers, ranging from fashion-architecture. Eep. But at the end of the day, the most frustrating bit is this – RISD brought him on for a reason. When he was at MIT he was fundamentally changing the way we think about design. They, (just like MIT and the rest of us), knew that if anyone could create a successful and highly integrated/evolved educational framework… It would be John Maeda.
How frustrating. Change. People want it, they bring the right people on board, but they’re afraid to act when the time is right.
Fear, politics, blah blah blah. If you have faith and trust in the people you have put into place, let them do what they do best.

Did you know that Los Angeles was originally named: El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula [The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels on the Porciúncula River]. I like the original name so much better.
Just got home from another awesome trip to LA. Good times with friends and colleagues.
I love LA so much, there is no other city like it in the world. From the beautiful mountains, to the incredible beach cities. Whenever I return to my ‘city of origin’ – It’s overwhelming. Sensory overload mixed in with a bit of emotional overload. Wherever you look, there are opportunities.
This trip was quite intense, with projects in Hollywood, Venice, Hermosa, Pasadena, San Clemente, Silver Lake, Glendale, Downtown, Lincoln Heights… It was awesome.
As with every trip back to LA, I try to find something new to rave about. A new place to eat, a new artist, a new song…
I had just landed at LAX, picked up my rental car and was making my way to Downtown LA. I was starving! My good friend Jamal recommended a little spot in Echo Park called Sage Vegan Bistro. Knowing I’m a vegetarian, he keeps tabs on the areas healthier restaurants and things.
I highly recommend Sage. As seen in my featured image above, the space is lovely. The windows are incredible, the exposed brick columns offer an authentic feel and it’s just a fun space. They did a great job of renovating.
The food is amazing.

I went with the “Tacos” – Chili seasoned jackfruit in corn tortillas with onion, cilantro, lime and micro greens served with black beans, gazpacho and sliced mango. – $7.95
I wanted to go back for every meal and have these tacos over and over and over and over and over again. They were so amazing.
The staff was friendly and the service was right on.
Other items I wanted to enjoy: Black Bean and Plantain Focaccia, Smoked Soyrizo Burrito, Macaroni and Cheese…
Be sure to go when you’re in the area and let me know what you think.

To conclude, my trip to LA was fantastic. Thanks to everyone that helped to make it a successful one.

What are the odds that the world is going to end in 2012? If you had asked me this question five years ago, I would have laughed in your face. Today, I’d cry on your shoulder.
It’s truly, absolutely, insanely depressing watching the news. The world is in a very bad place. No need to outline the current events that lead me to these thoughts/feelings, I’m confident you are in the know.
In 1997 I wrote a paper for a political science class that illustrated my theory of a volcanic eruption/earthquake ending the great US empire, ultimately crippling the entire world. The gist: Yellowstone national park [the world's largest volcano] erupts and annihilates one third of our country. The fallout would essentially wipe out all: Power, agriculture, communication and… everything. I haven’t thought of that paper for years. But as I sat there, glued to the television, watching as mother nature destroyed one of the most beautiful countries in the world, I remembered my report.

The devastation in Haiti was incredible, but it was foreign to me. I have never been to Haiti. I don’t have friends that live there.
The devastation in Japan is insane. It’s not foreign to me. I have spent a lot of time in Japan. I have a lot of friends there. The Japanese culture is so amazing, the people are beautiful and I’m at a total loss for words. I can ramble, I can hit the keys on my laptop, but I can’t pull the proper words together to express my thoughts. .

It’s a bit much, isn’t it.
We live in a world that is NOT, in a good place. Don’t believe me? Watch the news for an hour.
As of this week, the world has actually, physically shifted. By about 6.5 inches on it’s “figure” axis.
For years I have been hoping that the shift would be a spiritual thing, a global positive shift in the mind. [Don't be confused, spirituality and religion are very different, this isn't about religion.] We were born into a world that is, and has been, negative. For centuries the great minds/philosophers/prophets have been speaking of a positive “shift” that will take place.
Experts on the subject believe it is supposed to take place in the 21st century…
I’ve got my fingers crossed that it’s sooner then later.

Remote – the title of this post. Have you ever been in an extremely remote location? It’s an amazing feeling to be so far removed from society. A few times, I found myself on an island in a series of islands so fucking far away from the comforts of modern amenities, that if I needed proper medical attention, it would take at least 24 hours to find them.
I want to go to there.

*dictated but not read.
