sun up mix

Every season my best friend Mr. pageOne makes a mix. Every season he puts together an incredible blend of awesomeness and dang. You can learn more about him here. Every mix I ask him to throw together a few words to describe the mix and you can read those words here:
Here's a summery mix for you to tote along on road trips or for simply milling around the house with the windows and doors open. The idea was conceived by Miss Parks outta Tulsa, OK, and is basically meant to be a compilation of music that I might play for a group of hungover morning risers. In order to be eligible for the compilation the music had to satisfy at least one of three categories: 1)it makes me smile, 2)it makes me sing, or 3)it makes me dance. Hopefully, you'll have a similar response. Tracks span a time range from the 1970's to barely released and the scope of style is a also diverse, but musically (in form) related. Anyway, enjoy!
The "sun up" mix file is large, but that's because I try to keep the sound quality high!
I'm not sure that most of your deserve to play this for your earholes, but I am going to let you. When you play it for the first time, wait for a Sunday morning, cook some pancakes or waffles, enjoy exactly 8 ounces of orange juice, take 10 deep breathes, kick your feet up, pick up your favorite book.... And when it is all over - call your best friend and talk about the good ol' days.

SEEK Frank update

Congrats to @bowlerjim for finding Frank this afternoon! I would have posted this sooner but I have been traveling. This photos rule... Don't forget - Michael is still chillin in UNC - No more clues will be given, he is tucked away and safe. You just need to make some friends at UNC Chapel Hill to help you. Remeber, ALL clues are on my twitter!
I also decided to put the lock down on my twitter - meaning I have protected all my posts...
Congrats again Jim!

Don't know about SEEK? You have to be kidding me? Read about my world wide scavenger hunt here.

Amy Martin [interview]

I just posted an interview I did with bad ass Amy Martin on www.leftfieldproject.com here is a taste:

Who is Amy Martin?
A fearless gypsy-like girl who is very lucky to have lived in several eclectic places as kid because she learned to accept and embrace change. And, she’s a gummy bear connoisseur.
What did you want to be when you were a kid?
A marine biologist until I learned I had to study amoeba for way too many years before I could even get in the water with dolphins. Last week, I had a brief desire to be a ghost chaser. Often times, I think it would be rad to deliver flowers all day.

Now go read the whole thing here.

SEEK - Frank

More clues on @duanefernandez - However, I feel like this should be the last clue. And to all you North Carolina kids searching for Michael - good luck. You should have enough info to find him. If not, I might share one more clue by the end of the week.

nonsense

Six states in seven days.
With that being said, there has been a lot of downtime to contemplate many different things. Including but not limited to: Patience, friends, life, social media, travel etiquette, photography, love, smiles, work, research, faith, perseverance, character, honesty, eyes, communication, hate, fear…
I’ve come up with some new theories. I am going to work on them for a while and share with you all very soon.
One of the best quotes from the weekend came by way of Bad-Foot-Barringer:
“I am going to marry the first girl I see wearing Lakers pasties.”
I don’t care who you are, that’s brilliant. And I think he was being honest.
I’m currently sitting in Denver International Airport (again) and only have a few moments to wrap up this nonsense.
Yesterday was a difficult day. Without getting into the details: I miss my best friend.
I know he is always down here when I need him or when we need prime lake conditions, [thanks for the glassy waters P], but it’s not enough.
I miss my west coast family. I need to see them more often. Thank you guys for an incredible weekend.
Airport observation: Crocs > Nike/Jordan
Across the country observation: Gladiator Sandals are everywhere. I initially hated their fashion invasion, but I guess they are cute.
Have faith and do what you love to do on a daily basis, only good things will come your way. When bad things do arise, breath and revert to: Have faith and follow your heart.

true blood

My little sister posted a note on twitter saying: “True Blood didn’t suck..”
Was she satisfied with her True Blood experience or not? Using the words “didn’t suck” at the end of a sentence is so hot right now. You can also use other variations of the phrase, such as “wouldn’t suck” or possibly “couldn’t suck.” Ex. “Making out with Heidi Klum this weekend wouldn’t suck…” However, I was confused when my sister used this phrase with the object “True Blood” - a vampire reference. IF one uses the term “didn’t suck” in regards to a vampire experience, is that good or bad? Confusion also appears when using said phrase with any vacuum reference.

In other news:
Airports that don’t suck this week: Denver International. Thanks for the free wifi and keeping your premises classy and clean.
Suck it Atlanta, tell your airport to take a lap.

all points west

I just received the PASTE summer festival guide and all I have to say is I wish All Points West was in Oklahoma. Aside from having ONE cohesive marketing campaign [My biggest problem with most "festivals" are their terrible marketing campaigns - get it together people...] All Points West has an unbelievable line up. A real line up. With good music. Peep this:
Beastie Boys, The Black Keys, Coldplay, My Bloody valentine, Lykke Li, Vampire Weekend, Mogwai, The Cool Kids, Q-Tip, Gogol Bordello, Arctic Monkeys, MGMT...

Lucky.

dane cook

Here is a look at the Dane Cook box I painted. Apparently he really liked it! I was in North Carolina so I couldn't be there to present it to him, but I do hope he truly enjoys it. I'm happy that I get to paint these custom boxes for celebrities while still working on SEEK for fun! The next custom box will be painted for Jaimie Foxx!

SEEK: Michael + musical denmark

Michael is chillin and can't wait for someone to find him. A library is a collection of sources, resources, and services, and the structure in which it is housed: it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, or a private individual. In the more traditional sense, a library is a collection of books. The term can mean the collection, the building that houses such a collection, or both.
More clues to come, but I recommend you start a folder titled "SEEK" and in that folder you start adding individual folders for each mission. "Michael" is going to be a little tough. Always turn a negative situation into a positive situation.

A SEEK write-up in Urban Tulsa this week here. You can also download the entire issue or pick one up if you are in the Tulsa metro region.

SEEK getting love on moosejaw.com! Thanks to Moosejaw and Rebecca for making that happen! Great people over there and you should buy products from them. Because they are funny. Sign up for their newsletters and find out what we are talking about.

Live the dream!

SEEK update: Frank and Michael

2 Cities 1 week:
A. One city is home to the oldest public university in the U.S., founded in 1793.
B.
Want a clue
to the other city? Well, do you know what my favorite candy is? Search and find the answers here on my blog. Details my friends. Details.
*These clues are in no particular order.

Things might get confusing this week.
So pay attention. I couldn't pay attention to my teacher in third grade and she hated me. If you can't pay attention I promise I won't hate you. I think your beats are nice.
All clues this week will either be labeled: Frank or Michael. I think you can figure it out why.

New to SEEK? Learn more about our summer project here.
*Remember - All clues will start on twitter first!

YES! & YES!

Undisputed kings of the NBA..... Impressive work Lakers.
It's been TOO long!

bass appeal

Apparently I love fishing!
I mean... I love deep sea fishing, but I've never been that into fresh water.
My future brother-in-law hooked me up with some Bass fishing tips and now I'm pretty awesome at it. I'm even going to buy myself a sweet fresh water setup this July. [When I get back from all my trips of course..]
Go Fish!

Tony Hsieh x LFP

I had the opportunity to interview Tony Hsieh a few weeks ago and it was rather exciting. If you aren't familiar with the superstar CEO you should check out the LFP post here. Some of my favorite parts of the interview:
What advice could you give to someone coming out of college?
Ask yourself what you would be so passionate about doing that you'd be happy doing it for 10 years even if you didn't make much money from it. Then go do it.
What is one thing most people would be surprised to learn about you?
That I sit in a cubicle.

He rocks.
I also recommend picking up this issue of Inc. Magazine.
It looks like we will have the first LFP book out this winter.
Keep your fingers crossed.

SEEK: Woody Guthrie

Here is the thing folks, it will always start with my twitter.
You will always get the clues there first. But if I link back to here (my blog) there is a reason. Clues are everywhere and my clues will evolve throughout the project. It's in the details.... File the clues away and keep track of everything.
In 1740 - Friedrich II comes to power in Prussia upon the death of his father, Friedrich Wilhelm I...

Finally, here is some SEEK twitter lingo:
"SEEK clue" means that the search has begun and the box is hidden! I will typically start by giving clues to the host city a few days before I give clues to the exact location of the piece. But maybe not always. IF something is SEEK related - clues are going to be found in the most random places. I recommend keeping notes.
"SEEK update" will be used to announce the box has been found. Or any other urgent announcement for that matter.

You guys are awesome! Good luck!
Oh, and by the way, you should know by now that Woody is in Tulsa. Just sayin.

Mr. Woodrow Guthrie

He's awfully handsome isn't he?! He's getting anxious.
Oh and by the way, here is a photo of the cuff that was hidden with Jimi in Seattle. It's beautiful! I wanted to keep it for myself. But I didn't.

SEEK - Jimi found a home!

The search is over in Seattle!
Jimi was found this morning in... I received this @ 12:10 PM CST:
"I just found it about 10 minutes ago... some other people were looking for it too! Oh well, I FOUND JIMI HENDRIX!"
I was SO happy to receive this e-mail!!! It made my weekend! Congratulations!
More details to come.
I also received this note from my friend Dustin who is really excited about SEEK:
Seems like it would be fun if the cities were places where you may or may not know someone there. For instance, I don't have a single friend in Australia. however, if a clue was dropped in said city, I would try to forge a friendship with someone via facebook or the like to find the box. However, the clues get dropped so fast, there hardly seems time for that. Either I will know someone there or I wont.
SEEK has a few objectives and they are not all going to be revealed right now. You will learn all about them when we publish the magazine when the project is complete. Remember, this is also a social experiment. But if you know me, I'm all about making new friends. So perhaps you are onto something Dustin... Here are some hints for those who SEEK: I will always give one clue as to which city the box will be hidden in. I will do this at least 24-48 hours before I hide the box. Then I will give a photo clue. Then a few text clues. Throughout the summer I will be hiding clues in a variety of ways...... ALL clues will be communicated FIRST through my twitter - so sign up! Why? Because you might be out looking for the box and I could be giving more clues that you can follow on your phone... Twitter is convenient.
Make some new friends and get creative! One box down, 22 more to go!
Next clue: The next piece hits a little too close to home.....
more to come..

SEEK: Where is Jimi?

Most people know by now that Jimi is in Seattle... BUT where in Seattle? This is the first photo clue of this project! I am so stoked:
All the clues to his whereabouts are posted in my twitter:
http://twitter.com/duanefernandez
And I will be updating the clues til he is found!
Inside you will find a rare one of a kind Spexton cuff or bracelet, (I can't give away the surprise) but it is gorgeous!
If you are not familiar with the project, here is some info:
I'm excited to announce Left Field Project's new art experiment titled "Seek." Four years ago Duane Fernandez, Creative Director of Left Field Project, was trying to figure out a way to create a zine based on completely random content. Two months ago he had a dream he was hiding large pieces of art in cities around the world. Fernandez awoke the next morning and started putting the pieces together. This can get complicated, so please follow closely:
1. Fernandez will be hiding 23 wooden jewelry boxes around the world in the next three months.
2. Each wooden jewelry box is hand painted by Fernandez and will feature a portrait of an American icon.
3. Each box will contain a handmade bracelet/cuff made specifically for this project by Spexton jewelers.**
4. Each box will be individually numbered.
5. Each box will contain a questionnaire. Fernandez will ask each person that finds a box to take part in a random and unique experience. Left Field Project will publish the experience in a limited edition magazine this fall.
6. Each box will have a personal message for the lucky individual who happens to track it down.
7. The boxes will be randomly hidden in public spaces around the world. After the art has been placed, Fernandez will publish a clue to the whereabouts of the box via twitter: www.twitter.com/duanefernandez. Additional clues will be added every hour for three hours and will include photos.
8. The first individual to collect five boxes will receive: [1] A hand-painted portrait by Duane Fernandez. [2] Seven awesome beer koozies. [3] Two handwritten letters and a birthday card. [4] A coloring book and a box of crayons - the really awesome box of crayons with 64 colors and a built in sharpener. [5] A $100 gift card to McDonald's - we recommend the breakfast sandwiches - yum. [6] Two-year subscription to Fast Company magazine. [7] Two-year subscription to ID magazine. [8] 50 issue subscription to Business Week magazine [9] Two-year subscription to Complex magazine. [10] Two-year subscription to Glamour magazine. [11] Two-year subscription to Vogue magazine. We love magazines and we think everyone should have more print in their lives. [12] A picture of Fernandez's dogs. [13] 3 Left Field Project t-shirts. [14] A box of records. [15] $250 gift card to Moosejaw.com [16] 2 year subscription to Modernism magazine. [17] 10 issues to Dwell Magazine. [18] One-year subscription to Giant Robot magazine. We really love magazines. [19] $250 gift card to Spexton. [20] A pair of really neat socks. [21] A real mix tape. [22] A board game of Fernandez's choice. [23] A journal or diary, depending on your perception of the feminine/masculine nature of the words describing a book in which to write your thoughts.
9. The purpose of this project is to have fun, be creative and find art. The random nature of the project will unite a group of people from around the world who otherwise would never have met. Hopefully this project will remind people to go out and seek things for the love of randomness. Life is far too short, everyone should enjoy a scavenger hunt around the world every once in a while. People are encouraged to be resourceful and work with their friends across multiple platforms. Individuals can work with their peers in other cities, states and countries to hunt down these pieces. It should prove to be an interesting experiment.
10. Finally, not all of the details of this project can be disclosed at this time, but allow us to say this: It's very interactive. In many ways. As each box is found there are new aspects of the project that will unfold.

** Fernandez teamed up with Spexton [www.spexton.com] when he was asked to create a gift for Elton John, Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen.
The attached photo is of one of the cuffs - It will be hidden sometime next week on the east coast...
**Please forward to everyone you know and please repost via blog, your site, forum and twitter... I need you to help me spread the word. Email me for press release, images and additional info**

SEEK begins!

SEEK starts this weekend and will continue through the summer! Here is a photo of the first jewelry box we will be hiding. This piece is dedicated to good ol' Jimi Hendrix. What city will he be hiding in? Once the box is hidden I will be posting a photo of it's location immediately on my twitter = here! So stay tuned because I will also be sharing clues to it's whereabouts every hour on the hour... I recommend doing some research and narrow down your search now! Then notify your friends in those cities or city (if you are that good...).
The frequency in which I will be hiding these boxes is not consistent. I may hide 2 boxes in one day.... Or maybe take a couple of weeks off. Be prepared and get as many friends as possible to help you. More information on SEEK here.
Good luck!
I promise to share the next clue with you on my twitter in the next 24-48 hours.
Don't be confused, I will not always be sharing clues here on my blog, so be sure to follow me on twitter, as that is where all clues will begin. AND you might win prizes just for participating.
