For Immediate Release: "SEEK"

1. Fernandez will be hiding 23 wooden jewelry boxes around the world in the next year.
2. Each wooden jewelry box is hand painted by Fernandez and will feature a portrait of an American icon.
3. Each box will contain a handmade bracelet/cuff made specifically for this project by Spexton jewelers.**
4. Each box will be individually numbered.
5. Each box will contain a questionnaire. Fernandez will ask each person that finds a box to take part in a random and unique experience. Left Field Project will publish the experience in a limited edition magazine Fall 2010.
6. Each box will have a personal message for the lucky individual who happens to track it down.
7. The boxes will be randomly hidden in public spaces around the world. After the art has been placed, Fernandez will publish a clue to the whereabouts of the box via twitter: www.twitter.com/duanefernandez and this blog. Additional clues will be added until the box is found.
8. The first individual to collect five boxes will receive: [1] A hand-painted portrait by Duane Fernandez. [2] Seven awesome beer koozies. [3] Two handwritten letters and a birthday card. [4] A coloring book and a box of crayons - the really awesome box of crayons with 64 colors and a built in sharpener. [5] A $100 gift card to McDonald's - we recommend the breakfast sandwiches - yum. [6] Two-year subscription to Fast Company magazine. [7] Two-year subscription to ID magazine. [8] 50 issue subscription to Business Week magazine [9] Two-year subscription to Complex magazine. [10] Two-year subscription to Glamour magazine. [11] Two-year subscription to Vogue magazine. We love magazines and we think everyone should have more print in their lives. [12] A picture of Fernandez's dogs. [13] 3 Left Field Project t-shirts. [14] A box of records. [15] $250 gift card to Moosejaw.com [16] 2 year subscription to Modernism magazine. [17] 10 issues to Dwell Magazine. [18] One-year subscription to Giant Robot magazine. We really love magazines. [19] $250 gift card to Spexton. [20] A pair of really neat socks. [21] A real mix tape. [22] A board game of Fernandez's choice. [23] A journal or diary, depending on your perception of the feminine/masculine nature of the words describing a book in which to write your thoughts.
9. The purpose of this project is to have fun, be creative and find art. The random nature of the project will unite a group of people from around the world who otherwise would never have met. Hopefully this project will remind people to go out and seek things for the love of randomness. Life is far too short, everyone should enjoy a scavenger hunt around the world every once in a while. People are encouraged to be resourceful and work with their friends across multiple platforms. Individuals can work with their peers in other cities, states and countries to hunt down these pieces. It should prove to be an interesting experiment.
10. Finally, not all of the details of this project can be disclosed at this time, but allow us to say this: It's very interactive. In many ways. As each box is found there are new aspects of the project that will unfold.

** Fernandez teamed up with Spexton [www.spexton.com] when he was asked to create a gift for Elton John, Billy Joel, Dave Mathews, Britney Spears, Bruce Springsteen and a few others.
The attached photo is of one of the cuffs - It will be hidden sometime next week on the east coast...
**Please forward to everyone you know and please repost via blog, your site, forum and twitter... I need you to help me spread the word. Email me for press release, images and additional info**

sorry

I've been swamped kids. Sorry for the lack of posting. But things are going to be turning around in the next 48 hours. I have been working on my summer project for the past few weeks. Lots of details that needed to be ironed out. These details have kept me busy. Along with a lot of work in the office. Which is awesome. We'll be looking for an intern this June so if you know of anyone that might be interested, let me know or forward them my contact info. The intern should be awesome. Smell good. Eat well. Laugh a lot. Be inspired. Have the ability to design in many realms. Be eager. Be hungry. So yea...
Back to my summer project. Tomorrow I will be sending out a press release to over 20 cities around the globe - this press release will reach over 50 publications within one minute. I will be posting the details to my summer project here. I'm going to need all of your help to make this summer project more awesome than it already is. So when you get the details of this summer project - Please spread the word. I will be posting details HERE tomorrow @ 3:00 PM CST.
Stay tuned and thank you. For everyone's help.

multitouch barcelona

I think I'm quite good at developing new concepts in most disciplines.
However, it's difficult for me to think of new ideas in terms of communication between people and technology. I do try.
I love the term "human interface". That is why I appreciate groups like Multitouch Barcelona - a recently born interaction design group that explores natural communication between people and technology. We design experiences that merge real and digital into a creative environment where people are invited to touch, play, move, feel as they do in the real world.
one of their projects:

Meastro Knows x Terry Kennedy

Our friend Levi Maestro dropped his 9 episode last week and it featured Terry Kennedy and the new Supra TK Society. The TK Society's are NICE.. Last fall I photographed Lil Wayne and he was wearing a pair of all red Suprano Highs. Ever since then I have been dying to pick up a pair of Supras. You might recognize Terry Kennedy (this statement is for non-skaters) from the skate sessions on Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory. Also in Levi's newest episode= P-Rod - aka Paul Rodriguez, aka Paul Rodriguez Jr. [Did you know that one of the skate industries most marketable skaters: "P-Rod" - is actually the son of comedian Paul Rodriguez?]

some photos from last week

A new addition to our office:
The best small town restaurant around: The Hen House - Okemah, OK.
I started eating then remembered that I didn't get a photo of the meal. The Monday special - meat Loaf with creamy potatoes, country biscuit and green beans. So good. Another van down the street... It was covered in brass artifacts.
I love cutting stencils. It's like meditating.
The stencil at home.

what's on my desktop?

It's so hot right now...
I actually like this one.

my chemical romance

To make a long story short: Somehow "My Chemical Romance" was brought up in conversation last night and today I wanted to see what they were up to. Like I said, it's a long story... Anyway, the first thing I noticed on their site was this:
What?
I'm not sure of all the laws regarding body armor, but I know In CA it's unlawful for a convicted felon to purchase or possess body armor or for suspects to possess body armor during the commission of a crime. This faux body armor concerns me...
They even have this disclaimer:
What were they thinking?

goodbye

I was completely shocked when I found out that Wayman Tisdale had passed away. His wife had taken him into the hospital because he was having a difficult time breathing. As yet, it is unconfirmed whether his death was related to his battle with cancer.
Tisdale graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he grew up. As a college player at Oklahoma from 1983 to 1985, he was a three-time Big Eight Conference Player of the Year and the first player in collegiate history to be named a first-team All American by the Associated Press in his freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons.[4] He still holds the record at Oklahoma for the most points scored by any player through his freshman and sophomore seasons. He won a gold medal as a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic basketball team coached by Indiana University's Bobby Knight, and the Indiana Pacers made Tisdale the second overall pick in the 1985 NBA Draft. As a center and power forward, Tisdale averaged over 15 points and six rebounds per game in a 12-season professional career with the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns. His best season was in 1989–90 with the Kings, when he averaged 22.3 points and 7.5 rebounds a game. Tisdale and Mitch "The Rock" Richmond combined to form one of the most dynamic duos in the NBA. In 1997, Tisdale retired to focus on his musical career. In 1997, Tisdale became the first player in any sport to have his jersey number (23) retired by the University of Oklahoma.[5] When Blake Griffin was granted permission to wear it during his career at OU (2007–2009), he sought and received Tisdale's blessing before accepting it.
After he retired from sports Wayman Tisdale went on to have a successful career in the music industry where his passion for Jazz lead to numerous accolades.
It was during the OU - TU game when I had the opportunity to meet Wayman. I was on the baseline focusing on Blake Griffin when he leaned over to me and said "He's an incredible player isn't he?.. That number 23 jersey is magic..." then he humbly laughed and smiled. I leaned back and had a brief conversation with Wayman about Blake. He pointed out that there were over twenty NBA agents and scouts sitting behind us and they were all there to see Blake.
I read a quote from Jeff Capel yesterday that said, "[Tisdale] had an incredible gift of making the people who came in contact with him feel incredibly special." It was a short conversation that I shared with Wayman, but Capel is right, he was incredibly sincere and warm.
His smile was absolutely contagious...
The world lost a great soul yesterday.
His family is in my thoughts.

shame on everyone

I shouldn't say everyone.... But shame on Newsweek and Quickhoney. I'll get to that in a minute.
This year TIME magazine published a rather progressive magazine cover - The infamous Obama x Shepard Fairey poster. [I should have clarified, Progressive for TIME magazine] Well, it was pretty cool I guess... The fact that street art was now a household thing, the fact that soccer moms across the country were now down with stencil art and the average person was throwing around Shepard Fairey's name like he was Bob Ross.... Annoyed me a little.
But whatever, it's good exposure for Shepard Fairey. He deserves it. That dude has been hustling for a LONG time now. I've got numerous original OBEY pieces that are about 10 years old, so hopefully his popularity will only increase the value of my art collection.

So back to my post. Shame on you Newsweek and Quickhoney:
Newsweek's May 4th issue with the "To Boldly Go..." where no man has gone before theme is a bit hysterical and hypocritical. It appears that Newsweek wanted to share in some of that Shepard Fairey excitement. But they probably didn't want to pay for it. So they paid Quickhoney (a design studio) to create that terribly unoriginal image of Doc Spock. (above) A blatent Shepard Fairey knock off. They couldn't even come up with a new color way? A new style? It's all Shepard Fairey. Even the lines used for shading... WOW.
I went to the quickhoney site and it appears that they do some pretty cool pixel art and stuff. But they had to have known that people would notice this...
Shame on you.

around the office

I finally cleaned my desk today. It was getting out of control... (above)
To the right of my desk I have my records:
I love records. I've been wanting to go pick up some new LP's but I can't find the time. Hopefully by the end of next week I will have some time. Things are a bit chaotic right now and I am trying to wrap up a few projects so I can tell you guys all about my summer art project. It's ridiculous. I actually came up with the idea in a dream. What?! Yes. I'm serious.
If you look closely at the second photo, you will see phrough's new toys. On the right. On top of the amps... The two monkeys with parachutes. Yes, they are awesome. If you don't know about the slingshot monkeys go here and buy some. They are fun.

Finally...
I can't believe I am going to say this.... BUT, I HOPE that Kris Allen doesn't get sent home tonight. Somehow I got wrapped up in American Idol this year and I'll be so pissed if he goes home.

could I be more proud?

Today my brother unveiled the statue he designed for the Centennial Park in Downtown Tulsa. The statue was originally only supposed to be 4ft tall, but after presenting his designs to the board they decided to move the statue to the corner (the more prominent end of the park) and secure funding to make it bigger. 3 years later and it's unveiled... The statue now stands over 15ft tall at the intersection of 6th and Boston.
The park was built to commemorate the last one hundred years in Tulsa and to celebrate it's future. My brother's design was inspired by the oil industry that has made Tulsa what it is today = An economically sustainable city with rich international culture.
I've become use to seeing my brothers work in public spaces, he's an architect after all, but this is different. To see something my brother had full creative control over was quite exciting. Being an architect, unlike many design professions, his work is heavily influenced by so many variables. Needless to say, I was so happy when he got this opportunity.
I'm so proud of my brother. Well done dude, it's absolutely incredible...
Here are a few photos I snapped from the festivities this morning:

kobe x beats

It appears that the Lakers have found their grove. Thank god.
I wasn't too worried about that though...
However, I did notice something interesting during the press conference last night. I spotted Kobe Bryant with a pair of Studio (Beats) headphones in a colorway I had never seen:
I'm a headphone snob and for the past 5 years I have been completely loyal to my Sony 700's. But I think it's time...
Here is an interesting article I found on the Beats Studio headphones in TIME.
If you have not listened to music through a pair of real - quality headphones, you are missing out. Studio headphones deliver the music the way the artist, producer and engineer wanted you to hear it. You lose a lot of detail in your car or in your home stereo, unless you have some wicked high end home studio of course. Solid studio headphones typically start around $200, which is nice because 7 years ago you couldn't touch a pair for anything less than $400.
I love technology. I love music. I love the lakers.... Seems like one hell of a fit.

And if you happen to be a Kobe hater... You MUST be a LeBron fan. In which case, he did give his entire team a pair of the Beats Studio headphones for Christmas...

random photos of the week!

I'd like to thank you all for sending your random photos! I love them. This first one was sent by my dear friend Cindy. Her fiance is a DP in NYC and was on location in the city shooting... Incredible. I can't wait to be on location in NYC. Violins in the street:
Matt sent this photo of one of his players slide tackling an opponent..
"He stuck this kid so hard, I think he broke his ankle."Charley sent this photo a couple of weeks ago along with a wonderful story. Charley, I hope that one day you write a book. You are a great writer. Here is just a sample of his story - He was crossing the bridge in the picture below in complete darkness... "About half way across as my left foot stepped solidly on the next tie and my righ't foot was swinging to its next position, I noticed that a brown, lumpish something was laying on the top of the bridge between my left foot and the rail. Being the curious fellow that I am, I wondered "what the hell is that?" As I turned and bent to look down at it, It F&#*^G EXPLODED!"
I took this picture while we were down in Okemah two weeks ago. I'm pretty sure it was a bull snake. A big F*cking Bull snake. It was about 6 ft long:Something I observed yesterday:This next photo is from Lil Parrott - my little bro. It was titled "Happy birthday to me.."
Plant some seeds... Tom sent me this photo last week as part of our Random "Shot and Song" game.... Awesome photo Thomas. Ty Law is pretty dope... Here is my song choice for the above photo.... AND it is also my song to you all on this fabulous Friday afternoon! Download it and enjoy.

beyond the thunderdome [random photo of the week]

This here is not the random photo of the week:
That's a photo of the Thunderdome.
Last weekend, (while in Fort Worth - AKA Funky Town), Becky and I met up with DFW friends Kyle and Behyad for one hell of a time. We had a lots of drinks at the Library, watched the Celtics triple overtime game against the Bulls, played some foosball, played some pool, then we want back to Beyhad's place for a few more drinks and......... THUNDERDOME! (Was that dramatic enough?) Because, the THUNDERDOME is incredible and deserves the drama. Beyhad has a dope pad in downtown Funky town with an amazing view over the city:
Well, yesterday I got an awesome email. It was from Kyle. The electronic note was accompanied by a photo:
The note read from Kyle read: "Figured you'd get a kick out of this since you saw his place. we ended up on the roof of the neighboring buildings last night in ftw in search of a thunderdome ball that went out the window. ah god bless cinco de mayo!"

Well done kids. Thanks for the laugh and the random photo!
I hope you found the ball...
EVERYONE - Please send in random photos.

oh snap!

This really just happened.
Like 15 minutes ago. I can't believe it.
I'm driving back down to the office and as I am about to park I see the Cameravan! I've seen photos of this thing over the last 10 or so years but I never thought I would run into it by the studio! Here is the van:
The story goes: "One night In the fall of 1993, Harrod Blank had a dream in which he covered his car with cameras and then drove around and took pictures of people on the streets. The public, unaware that the cameras worked, reacted naturally. At the end of the dream, Harrod looked at pictures taken with the van of faces frozen in the moment of awe, pictures so powerful that the next morning he decided to attempt to build such a vehicle in reality."
I recommend you take the time to learn more about his story: here.
An incredible story... And it's true you know - Follow your dreams.
They were busy unloading the van and getting ready for the show, but I asked Harrod if he would mind posing for a quick portrait... I snapped one photo and let them get back to business. There will be an opening tomorrow afternoon at the Liggit studio and will feature photos taken from the van and photos of other really awesome cars that are similar in creativity. I'm stoked.
Life is so random and beautiful. Just like that, in 15 minutes, I took some of the most ridiculously creative photos I have ever taken. And it wasn't even on my calendar.
